Acer Swift 5 Review

Acer Swift 5 is one of the best laptops that attracts customers towards it even more than a MacBook Pro which is slim, light, powerful and still very expensive.

Apparently, Acer and Asus are dominating the PC market. Asus released Asus Zenbook containing a more expensive looking design as compared to Acer Swift 5.

However, Acer Swift 3 is also there which fits in lower budgets. Acer Swift 5 is versatile, light and a perfect screen for the price.

Pros & Cons

Pros Cons
Aluminum construction Dim display
Strong, 8th-Gen Core performance A ton of bloatware

Acer Swift 5 comes in two version. A lower end model, which is having an expensive look, lightweight which is quite different from $1292.30.

However, in $967.93 there is a 7th-generation Intel Core i5 CPU, a 256GB SSD, and 8GB RAM, it is far less expensive than Dell XPS 13.

Therefore, an Intel Core i7 upgrade will cost you almost $129.23 and you will need another $129.23 to upgrade SSD, therefore, the total cost of a laptop will be $1226.39.

These models are cheaper than Dell and have also beaten Asus’ models. It appears to be the closest alternative to ZenBook UX330 which cost you almost $1097.16 which even more expensive than Swift5 which will cost you $967.93.

Unlike all other laptops, these models come with 2-year warranty instead of one-year warranty but it is a “Carry-in” warranty.

Which means that you will have to find a service center which requires more effort as than a collect and return.

The company’s manufacturer has eliminated some metal from the laptop to make it more thin and light. There is a high friction soft touch plastic at the bottom surface of the laptop.

However, these models are perfect to use if the place at a stable place as it is not at all a metal laptop. Initially, it was expected that the rigid lid would be of plastic too but it is coated metal.

However, it is a strange move initiated by the company to let users feel and see metal as a plastic. But, it is not for a first time that the company has done this.

Apparently, these laptops are one of those laptops which add value to your personality and wants to impress you rather than doing some boring stuff in coffee shops.

In laptop market, Acer is known to make some of the unusual design choices, an unusual lid is yet another example of these models.

Acer Swift 5 review design

However, the main benefit these models are having is cost and their design. These models weigh almost 1.3Kg which makes it lighter and affordable as compared to other models.

Acer Swift 5 is 14.6mm thick which provides you the similar practical benefits as like thinnest laptops.

However, Acer did not fully exploit even from the use of fancy material for making Acer Swift 5, its build is very good and you will find it amazing once you start exploring things.

The company didn’t add much flex to the screen and the flex in Keyboard is zero, which is to be found in most of Asus’ laptops.

Nowadays, the companies are also working on laptop look along with internal features so that they attract the users more rapidly.

The Acer Swift 5 did not cut out all the traditional connections as some of the most recent and most expensive laptops did, however, it comprises of few things from all versions.

Acer Swift 5 is featuring two full-size USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C 3.1 port through which you can perform all your normal accessories and peripherals.

These laptops comprise a full-size SD slot along with an HDMI, which will allow you to connect to a TV or monitor.

Well, if the users don’t want to buy additional adapters or cables, this is some kind of alternative connector arsenal for you. These connectors are worth 4mm thick as compared to modern 10mm thick crowd.

Keyboard And Touchpad

These laptops are also featuring a fingerprint scanner on the trackpad. These are starting to appear on the screens of the most recent laptops as like feature in phones which allows a user to place their thumb instead of entering passwords or pin.

Acer Swift 5 is having a built-in feature of Window’s 10 named as Hello. This is what allows you to use a finger scanner or camera driven face recognition.

However, after few tests, the experts said that these laptops are not 100% reliable and often these laptops take a lot of time to work. And, it is quite expensive, so users might not spend a lot of money for this feature.

The Acer Swift 5 features a plastic touchpad rather than a glass and therefore it is resistant to finger friction squeak while you move your finger on the touchpad. But, it is a good trackpad and having a good impression like a glass trackpad.

The size of a clicker is good and also feels good. These laptops are featuring a good keyboard and similar to most of the thin laptops, its action is reasonably shallow rather than having an ultra-compressed keyboard as like MacBooks.

If you ever got an experience to use the keyboard then you might feel good quality of keys along with long-form typing comfortable.

However, the users may have been disappointed due to the addition of plastic trackpad but the company covered it by adding the backlight to the keyboard, which is very helpful in a dark.

You may not have found these laptops more attractive at first look but it has a very slender screen surroundings, which allows Acer to release a 14in display into a frame which is not bigger as compared to that of a 13in laptop.

However, it is slightly less intense but a good one as Dell introduces it in its Infinity Edge XPS displays. And, this feature makes this machine a truly modern machine but the main drawback is its price.

Almost all of the companies uses conventional Tech behind the screens by utilizing an IPS panel along with a glossy top layer without a touchscreen, but we can say that at this price the image quality is perfect.

Therefore, it can be able to compete with all other laptops above $967.93 laptops including HP Spectre 13.

Acer Swift 5 screen

These laptops are having good contrast. At 1045:1, these laptops produce good results just similar to an IPS LCD screen, which makes images more bold and attractive.

But, Acer Swift 5 does not include an ultra wide color gamut and doesn’t have the ability to max out sRGB color standard but sometimes in person, the results look good. It reaches 81.2% of sRGB, 58.2% of Adobe RGB along with 61% of DCI P3.

However, the maximum brightness that these laptops at 351cd/m2 look perfect, but the glossy display is not suitable for performing outdoor works and its backlight is strong enough to be used in the sunshine.

This screen looks great and appropriate, the hinges of this screen fold back reasonably far, to around 140 degrees. This screen does not fold flat but it is much easier to angle the screen if you have placed a laptop on your lap or knees.

One of the charming attributes of Acer Swift 5 is that it is even faster than the more expensive Swift 7.

Because these laptops are featuring a standard Intel Core U-series laptop CPUs instead of using an ultra-low voltage type, this feature helps fan to become more efficient and does not require a cooling fan to drop its temperature.

This makes Swift’s i5 and i7 versions more powerful as like all other laptops using these processors counting all the machines above $1200.

The efficiency of Acer Swift 5 effects if we put parts like SSD which makes these laptops bit slower than ultra-premium models.

It writes at 390MB/s and reading speed is 550MB/s. But, if you are transmitting a large amount of data regularly, you may not consider the difference.

These laptops are featuring a DDR3 RAM instead of 2133MHZ DDR4, which is a top speed as supported by the CPU.

I am writing the review of a model featuring an Intel Core i5-7200U CPU along with a dual-core having a 2.5GHz standard clock speed along with 3.1GHz turbo boost.

It performs good and is very responsive to general use like if the user is doing light photoshopping and doing hobbyist video editing. If compare it with 13in MacBook Pro, it is compatible with this performance respect.

The Acer Swift 3 scores 7424 points in Geekbench 4 and 2369 in PC Mark 8 Home, can expect similar results from a 7th Generation Core i5 laptop.

The Acer Swift 5 features an Intel HD 620 GPU built into a Core I5 CPU, therefore, it can only support the games that you can play on your Xbox or PS4.

At Alien Isolation, these laptops scores an average of 31.5fps points at 720p resolution, while at the 1080p resolution the laptop manages to make an average of 13.6 fps points.

But, the laptop struggles more with a thief, at the 720p resolution the laptop makes an average of 22.7fps and 6.1fps at 1080p resolution.

Nowadays, almost all of the gaming power laptops are having such kind of consistent performance but MacBook Pro models are better because of having Iris graphics chip, which is still powered by Intel but is more powerful.

The Acer Swift 3’s fan starts spinning even if the user is doing some light work and is not silent as like fan in Swift 7. The fan is small in diameter, which means that it is having a high pitch fan noise, and having an outlet at the bottom surface of Laptop.

Battery life

The Acer Swift 5 has good battery life as these laptops last for 10 hours and 55 minutes if we play 720p video on loop at 120cd/m brightness, which is similar to most of the modern laptops.

Therefore, this is the good result and this shows that there is an excellent power management in the machine and these laptops are also having a good pure battery capacity.

These laptops feature a 53.9Wh battery which is much larger than HP Spectre having the 38Wh battery and is closer to that of Dell XPS 13 featuring a 600Wh battery.

This means that the users can easily complete their work within a day without maxing out the brightness or doing something to CPU taxing.

Let’s talk about the speakers, these laptops comprise of two speakers placed on the underside of each end, seems the bit similar to that of MacBook Pro, having a fair sound.

However, the speakers of Acer Swift 5 are loud and gives a good image of wide sound, but treble is the bit crumbly, producing little vibe. The overall audio quality is fair.
