Acer Swift 1

Acer Swift 1 Review

The Acer Swift 1 falls in the cheapest laptops category that is available in the market and it looks very similar to Macbook. These devices are slim and contain a metal frame having a lot of bright aluminum on a show.

On the other side, MacBook costs you almost $1274.17 and the one I am reviewing will cost you almost $468.58. Guess what, it is almost 3 times cheaper than the Apple MacBook.

The Acer Swift 1 is having Low CPU power and minimal storage which makes these laptops more suitable for light jobs including document writing, web surfing, and video streaming. However, it is strangely very much attractive slim and light laptop.

Well, the price of Acer Swift 1 is an attractive thing about these devices. The most common specs of these devices including Intel Pentium CPU,4GB RAM, and 64GB storage will be of $468.58.

Obviously, there has been a better version of Acer Swift 1 available in the market with 128GB SSD for $557.20. And, Core i3 with 128GB SSD and 8GB RAM is of $778.73.

As the cost increases, you will be getting a good and better version. Acer Swift 1 with Core i3 CPU is very different from its lower versions. Just like other laptops, these devices come with a one-year carry-in warranty.

Design And Build

When you see that a laptop is having $468.58 price, you think that it is having a thick plastic shell. Fortunately, Acer Swift 1 is not in a list of those laptops. These devices are affordable and have a full aluminum shell.

It is having an aluminum shell around its lid, keyboard and a bottom side as well. Normally, people may assume that these devices are having an $872.72 price tag instead of $468.58.

You might have witnessed that Acer has added aluminum in all of its devices even at a low price. Here the company applied the same idea.

At this price, the Acer Swift 1 provides you with a great look and feel. It has inflexible panels.  At the first sign of pressure and the aluminum, both are having a layered finished quite similar to some of the popular laptops.

It looks good even it is having a brighter and shinier finish as compared to others. Let’s discuss the signs that show Acer Swift 1 is not really an expensive laptop of 2017. It is having a black border at the side of the screen.

But the display surroundings are just like a classic laptop. Most of the latest laptops are having very less redundant space on their borders. But these laptops are having almost an inch of redundant space on the left and right side of the screen.

The weight and thickness of these devices make them fall into the “thin and thick” category of laptops. Acer Swift 1 has 1.3Kg weight and is under 15mm thick. So this is all about Design and Build of Acer Swift 1.

Ports And Connections

The Acer Swift 1 features almost all the main ports and connections that are part of modern laptops but you may miss some if you go for an expensive version.

Two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 has been included in these models. One USB-C port has been included rather than adding a much faster Thunderbolt 3.0.

acer swift 1 ports and connections

Definitely, you are not going to get Thunderbolt 3.0 on cheaper laptops like this one. Acer Swift 1 features a full-size HDMI and a full-size SD card slot. These ports you might have seen with powerful laptops.

Keyboard And Touchpad

No such awful surprises have been included in the Keyboard and trackpad section. Acer Swift 1 is yet again not in those super affordable laptops keys that feels cheap, having hollow feeling feedback or too much wobble.

It is having a solid but semi shallow chiclet design. The model at this price provides you more benefit over the expensive laptops featuring the same shell and keyboard.

Acer is the name of a popular brand so it can’t afford to make more cheap laptops than this. As Acer already build some great keyboard for its Chromebooks, therefore, the company is having an image of making good, cheap laptops.

Acer Swift 1 doesn’t feature any keyboard backlight. While most of the affordable laptops around the market do have backlit keyboards. So, we can expect that this budget laptop will have a backlit keyboard.

acer swift 1 keyboard and trackpad

Similarly, the trackpad is not high-end but it is good enough at this price. But it does have a plastic surface rather than having a textured glass. At the other end, fewer laptops with a plastic surface are more expensive than this one.

These devices are having smooth swipe along with solid click action. Moreover, it is not much loud, not broken, not deep and even not much stiffed. However, it is in competition with most of $1000 laptops.

Likes higher-end laptops, Acer Swift 1 features a fingerprint scanner on the right side of the trackpad. This is really impressive in a low-budget laptop. Definitely, it will have less quality as compared to higher-end laptops.

But it will allow you to log in to your PC using your fingerprint. Unfortunately, it may require a couple of attempts to identify your finger.

The screen of Acer Swift 1 is just good. And, it is still capable of providing you a 1080p IPS LCD display and its screen size os 13.3in. It is amazing to see that these laptops are providing “1080p” display along with an IPS.

Most of the cheap laptops are using TN screens which provides a bad viewing angle as compared to an IPS screen which as good viewing angles from all sides. Obviously, there are also drawbacks of Acer Swift 1.

One of them is that it is having unsaturated color as it features 61.2% of the RGB color. Tones don’t pop off the screen like any tablet at the same price. But, it is simply the best display at this price.

These devices do feature a solid contrast of 985:1 and it helps color capability. Yes, it is surprisingly an excellent screen at this price.

Moreover, it is a matt screen as well which makes it ideal to use in daylight or during the travel there is too much light reflection. Therefore, brightness is good enough for outdoor use.

The max brightness of Acer Swift 1 can be set to 266cd/m. However, you may require 350cd/m or above for the best result for outdoor use.

No touchscreen added but the screen can be bent down to 180 degrees instead of 10 degrees used commonly. This is yet another amazing feature included for more attraction.

Now lets come to the point that Why Acer Swift 1 is so cheap. Now lets come to the performance of CPU, which is a weaker part. The one I am writing about is having an Intel Pentium N4200 processor.

Acer Swift 1 features a quad-core CPU having a clock speed of 1.1GHz along with a burst of 2.5GHz. But comparing it to a Core series processors like Core i3, it is a bit weak.

As compared to all other laptops with a Core powered system, the Acer Swift 1 takes more time to install and load an app. Of course, any of the energetic applications like video editing or high-level 3D gaming can’t be loaded by this system.

One thing for sure, this generation of Pentium CPU have passed most of the budget windows laptops that are being released in recent years.

Before this generation, both Atom and Pentium powered laptops are very painful to use at times even with light work.

The Acer Swift 1 with its Pentium N4200 provides just a good feel but it lags when you try to drift across the sides of Windows 10 at the same time. But if you run the browser and Wordpad, the laptop remains cool and comfortable.

Well, you need to be a bit patient but not like the old entry-level laptops. The benchmark results of Acer Swift 1 are very poor. As these devices scores almost 1134 points in PC Mark 10 and on the other hand the Core i5 scores an average of 2700 points.

If we compare it with Lenovo Ideapad 320s featuring Intel Pentium 4450U scores an average of 2295, which shows that it can be a good lower power alternative to a Core series laptops.

Obviously, The Lenovo 320S is more expensive and even it is made up of plastic along with more bad screen as compared to Acer Swift 1.

These devices are having poor gaming performance as compared to Ideapad 320S but it is not worse than Pentium CPU with a low-end Intel HD 505 GPU.

At Alien, Isolation operates at an average of  9.8fps at a 720p resolution if all graphics are set to low. At 1080p resolution, these devices score an average of 3.3fps if graphics are set at max level.

acer swift 1 performance

These devices feature solid-state storage of 64GB, therefore, it presents single figure frame rates. Yes, there is not enough space to run high-end games.

It does not mean that its gaming abilities are zeros. We can play Sky-rim at 720p resolution with settings set to low.

The main purpose of using low-end laptops is to eliminate the functionality of a fan. It is having passive cooling quite similar to a tablet. Definitely, it will remain silent and it doesn’t matter what jobs you are performing.

Well, if you want to hear sound/noise, you need to put your ears close to the port and then you can hear an HDD like noise. It is expected that these noises maybe from the power supply or another component.

Battery Life

The company claimed that the battery life of Acer Swift 1 is just fine, according to the company Acer Swift 1 can last for 10 hours as it features a 42Wh battery.

But, if you play a 90-minute video on loop at 120cd/m brightness then the Acer Swift 1 can last for almost 7 hours and 49 minutes. Of course, it is not a great result at all, but you can do your daily work more easily.

Speakers are just good but these are not are special speakers as well. And, it remains non-distorted at higher output. Acer Swift 1 does not have volume but it does have mid-range bulk or base of best laptops.
